It is all too easy to end up in a cycle of negativity that leads to conflict. It might be that the behaviour of a member of staff is not entirely appropriate; or that a staff member has a somewhat negative approach to issues; or that there is something about a staff member’s manner which is unappealing. In any of these circumstances, it is possible to end up in a cycle of negativity and conflict in their relationships with staff.
Following your very brief introduction to the purpose of the training activity, the participants, working in small groups, respond to five different conflict situations between staff and the manager. The feedback session provides an opportunity to clarify strategies and the way forward in each situation. Learning is then summarised with a short presentation of a model – five strategic styles for managing conflict. The participants develop an awareness of their current style, consider any changes they might want to make to their style, and identify blocks to deciding and implementing strategies for managing conflict. This is done through individual and pairs work on personal learning. The training activity ends with your summary of the key factors in deciding which strategic style to use in a particular situation.
