All managers have witnessed inappropriate behaviour in staff they line-manage. How this behaviour is dealt with is crucial to individual and team well-being and to the psychological contract staff have with the organisation. If a manager either resorts directly to the disciplinary procedure (in all but the most serious cases), or ignores the behaviour, staff morale will be damaged, customers will experience a poor service, and the organisation will suffer. In all but the most serious cases, a manager is aiming to work with the staff member, to enable them to develop skills and behaviours in line with organisational policy and good practice.

Following a brief reflection upon the purpose of constructive criticism and your introduction to the purpose of the training activity, participants work in small groups to develop responses that challenge different scenarios involving difficult behaviour. From this, participants develop guidelines for constructive criticism and then move on to practise their skills in giving constructive criticism. The training activity closes with a discussion of the place of constructive criticism in staff management and the management of potential disciplinary situations.
