Maintaining contact shows that an organisation is series about attendance management. It also reduces time off. This training activity will look at a number of ways of staying in touch, ranging from telephone calls to home visits and work visits. It gives the participants the opportunity to plan and role play calls and visits, and acquire the skills needed to deal with the objections raised by those absent.

You begin the training activity with a brief introduction and ask the participants to work in groups to decide why it is important to keep in touch with staff who are absent from work. You review their ideas and identify the benefits of maintaining contact, to both the organisation and the individual. Next, you lead a discussion in which the participants suggest ways of keeping in touch with staff who are absent. The participants brainstorm difficulties that may arise, before working in groups to find solutions. You then lead a brief feedback session. The participants return to their groups to discuss and role play a series of case studies. You review their results before summarising the training activity and reminding them of the key learning points.
