The way we communicate within our working environment affects the outcome and effectiveness of our communication. Successful teams tend to be successful at communication – both within the team and outside it. In this training activity, small groups use different communication patterns to complete a task that parallels the work environment. Participants are then asked to reflect on their own style of communication and to consider whether change is necessary.

You explain that the purpose of this training activity is to investigate the effectiveness of different patterns of communication. Working in small groups, each participant is given hands of playing cards and assigned a particular pattern of communication that they use to discover the common element in the hands of cards in their group. They then give feedback at a plenary session where they are encouraged to relate what they have learned to their own experience and to consider how they might change their patterns of communication at work.
