It is a lucky manager who does not have to deal with an emotional employee from time to time. This training activity has a particular framework for the emotional situation, the one where your attempt to address the issue of under performance leads to an emotional outburst of tears or anger. The biggest difficulty with this type of situation is that is usually comes as a surprise. We are not expecting this sort of reaction, therefore the manager has to react quickly and effectively to the outburst, whether it is of anger or sadness, and even an outburst of joy can have consequences that are difficult to handle.

After a brief introduction to the training activity, the participants divide into small groups and consider times in their lives when they have been on the receiving end of an emotional outburst. Their responses are codified into the three cardinal principles. The participants then engage in role plays, where one participant plays an emotional individual and another plays the manager and tries to calm the person. They then look at a framework within which to operate the cardinal principles in the form of the critical process, and then practise using the critical process in a second role play situation. The training activity closes with a review of the cardinal principles and the stages of the critical process.
