Dealing with grievances involving bullies can be difficult. In this training activity, participants draw up a checklist to help a manager prepare for a hearing concerning a grievance about bullying behaviour, and then provide advice on how to deal further with the situation when the bully fails to comply with the agreement made at the hearing.

In this case study, a manager deals with a grievance about bullying behaviour. However, following the grievance hearing, the bully fails to honour the agreement made, and the manager has to deal with the situation. The case is in two parts. The first covers the initial grievance, and the second observes how the bully behaves following the hearing. Participants read the first part of the case, and then compile a checklist which would help the manager to prepare for the grievance hearing. After reading the second part, they are asked what the manager should do, as the bully appears to be persisting in his behaviour. The trainer sets the scene, by finding out what participants know about policies and procedures relating to bullying in their organisation. Having guided them through the first part of the case and ensured that all participants understand how to prepare for an effective grievance hearing, the trainer then presents the second part of the case, and asks participants to consider how the manager should deal with the bully’s lack of compliance with the agreement. Participants need some knowledge of how to apply discipline and grievance procedures, so this two-part case study should be used to demonstrate their application in practice. In the variations section there is a suggested method for using the two parts of the case study at different times during a training course.
