Non-attendance occurs either because people are too ill, physically or mentally, to come to work, or because they do not want to come to work. This training activity focuses on the reasons why staff stay away from work, both legitimate and spurious. The aim is to help participants understand these reasons so that they are then in a position to deal with the causes as well as the effects of absence.
You begin this training activity with a brief introduction, before the participants work in groups to identify the reasons why people stay away from work. Next, you lead a plenary session to review their responses, categorise them and discuss any patterns that emerge. The participants again work in groups to evaluate a series of case studies before presenting their results to the group. They then review their own organisations to identify different causes of absence. Finally, you summarise the training activity, asking participants for the key learning points that they will take back to the work place.
Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to focus participants on the different reasons for absence and identifies those which are acceptable. Case studies are used to enable participants to define different types of absence and find out why people do not come to work.
