Many managers attend training sessions on effective delegation and empowerment techniques. Indeed, many management and leadership qualification programmes have units or modules delivering the same message, that is, delegation is a valuable tool for the manager. In ‘the war for talent’, the talented or those with high potential need to feel engaged. If they feel that their potential exists beyond the confines of their identified job roles, and that their contribution can make a difference to the organisation achieving its objectives, then this needs to be recognised and rewarded (not just financially). The manager can play an important part; one method is to delegate tasks and projects to empower staff to expand their roles. However, the manager needs to be just as enthusiastic about the potential impact and positive benefits of effective delegation in order to make the whole thing work successfully.
The training activity opens with an initial analysis and deconstruction of the delegation process. Then the main part of the training activity moves to the world of Roman Britain. Participants are asked to read an unfinished story about a native Briton who is disillusioned with his tribe, especially the leader. He has a chance encounter with a Roman centurion who offers him an exciting career opportunity, but what will he decide? Participants are then challenged to complete the story working together in pairs. They are also encouraged to devise a ‘moral for the manager’ to the story and these become the foundation for participants to consider their own practice in the workplace.
Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to teach participants that delegation is a powerful management tool to engage and empower people with high talent potential. If the manager doesn’t act to engage talent, then a competitor organisation surely will.

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to remind participants of the usefulness of delegation as a leadership tool. It is useful for all levels and abilities but it should not be seen as exploring the detail of delegation, rather as more of a refresher exercise. The training activity presents delegation as another tool the manager can use in ‘the war for talent’. By using a light-hearted story, participants are encouraged to learn the moral of the story, and see how it can be applied in the workplace. This training activity can also be used as part of a training programme on delegation, leadership, management skills and motivation.
