Starting a new job isn’t easy. New recruits often feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information being thrown at them in the first few weeks. This might even lead to them asking themselves if they have made the right move! New starters need to be protected from overload, and given a chance to settle into their role. They will probably welcome any help you give them – particularly if that help takes the form of a planned induction process, based upon their individual needs. This training activity looks at how to design an induction programme which helps new employees (whether new to the organisation or existing employees who are new to the job) to get up and running as quickly as possible.

You introduce the training activity by asking participants to think back to their first few days in the organisation and recall the thoughts and emotions they experienced. You then introduce participants to the concept of induction and describe the benefits a structured induction process can offer new members of staff. You also explain the idea of the ‘commitment curve’. Next, you split participants into two groups to complete a case-study exercise – Right First Time – in which they put together an induction programme for a new administration manager. Following this, you discuss the groups’ conclusions, before outlining what should be the central components of any induction programme. Finally, you bring the training activity to a close by reinforcing the key learning points it has covered.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to enable participants to focus on planning the new job-holder’s introduction to the organisation, their department and their role. It emphasises the importance of providing new employees with a structured induction programme.
