Who you know can be as important as what you know, in determining your success at work. What is your image? Can you get access to key people when you need it? To what extent will they take you seriously? An individual’s power in an organisation may be the result of their position, their knowledge and expertise, their control of resources, their contacts, and/or their skills. This training activity provides an opportunity for participants to consider their influence in their organisation (or department/division), and to practise presenting themselves positively, to gain more influence.

Following your brief introduction to the purpose of the training activity, and to the iceberg model of organisational culture, participants visually depict their sphere of influence in the organisation. This is followed by an exercise in small groups to identify the key elements in how to influence in organisations, including how to present oneself positively. Participants identify the criteria for success in presenting a positive image, make presentations to the whole group and receive feedback on their presentation from one other participant. The training activity closes with a summary of the conclusions about organisational culture, and how to influence it, and with participants completing a learning log, to note their key learning and actions for the future.
