How creative are the team members in problem solving? How well do they take an initial idea and develop it, or put together the best parts of several ideas to come up with a realistic and workable solution? This exercise draws out the skills of the team members in problem solving and also imposes a time limit for the execution of the task, thus demonstrating the effects of a good or poor design.
The participants discuss the need for a range of ideas to solve a problem, as well as creativity and lateral thinking. They then work in teams to design and build a method of catching an egg that is suspended from the ceiling. The participants then use their apparatus to catch the egg. The participants debrief their team performance (or that of their leader). There is a final discussion all together of the learning points of the exercise.
Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers with all the participants or two teams as a lively, fun exercise on solving a practical problem creatively.

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers as a competition between two or more teams. It is best used part way through a team-building programme, especially after the team members have some experience of working together and need more of a challenge. It is particularly effective towards the end of the day or to liven up the participants, because of the ‘fun’ content of the exercise. The exercise is a good way of ensuring they plan thoroughly and practise working to plan, and will also help the participants to further develop and apply creative thinking, such as after ‘The clock’ exercise.
