If an organisation is to remain effective and competitive in the twenty-first century, it must be able to attract and retain the right people, with the right skills and knowledge, at the right time. To do this, the organisation will need to develop a recruitment and retention policy which allows it to compete for the best candidates – and win. An effective recruitment and retention policy should contain a number of things, including clear aims and a commitment to training for recruiters. On-going development of that policy, in line with changes in the employment market, is necessary to ensure that the organisation can continue to attract quality people. This training activity identifies the main topics for inclusion in a recruitment and retention policy, and highlights things which should be considered by employers wishing to maintain the effectiveness of such a policy.
You introduce the training activity by highlighting the need to compete with other organisations for the best employees. You then outline the importance of developing and regularly updating an effective recruitment and retention policy – in order to attract and retain the best candidates on the market. You next ask participants to think about the main topics which should be included in a recruitment and retention policy. You record their views on a sheet of flipchart paper, before taking them through suggested headings, and distributing a sample policy for their consideration. Moving on, you then explain the importance of reviewing the recruitment and retention policy to ensure that it continues to be effective. You ask participants to work in groups to suggest some things which might improve their organisation’s current recruitment and retention methods. You then compare their ideas with a list you have of suggested points to consider. Finally, you bring the training activity to a close by reinforcing the key learning points covered.
