In ‘the war for talent’, managers should leave no stone unturned. All people have the potential to make contributions and have a need to be developed. There may be some staff members who are part of a ‘fast track’ system or graduate entry programme. Equally, there may be other staff members who are not, but whose invited contribution and development may make the difference. It is important to recognise that there must be career pathways in an organisation for all staff. Managers can work with a human resources or training function to identify knowledge, skills and experience needed in their teams. In addition, a continuing professional development (CPD) framework can be created to develop talent potential in all staff. This training activity provides ‘a taster’ for managers considering the potential a CPD framework could offer for developing, recognising and rewarding all staff who demonstrate key skills, knowledge, enthusiasm and a passion for what they do.

The training activity opens with the participants and the trainers collaboratively defining the term ‘talent’ and examining the importance of managers keeping all staff motivated and engaged. Participants then brainstorm as many learning and development opportunities as they can. In team discussions they then explore a framework that could bring together all these development opportunities in an in-house CPD programme.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for trainers to allow participants to explore the various career pathways opportunities through an organisation by analysing potential benefits of an in-house CPD system as a way of opening up career pathways and rewarding the contributions of all staff.

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to introduce CPD, and to encourage participants to recognise that knowledge, skills and experience which benefit the organisation can exist in all staff. It also helps managers to think of ways in which a framework can be developed to engage and reward latent talent. This training activity can also be used in training programmes in management skills, motivation, and organisational development.
