Key motivational theorists such as Maslow and Herzberg identified that the acquisition of new skills and the opportunity to demonstrate them were highly placed in any list of motivators. During this training activity you will lead a review of how people learn from experience at work. The participants then help each other to identify which range of appropriate opportunities they will use to develop each of their top three competency needs.
You begin this training activity using an analogy to establish the different levels of competence displayed when performing a task. The link between increasing personal competence and motivational theory is established. You continue the discussion by reviewing the development of competency frameworks in both the USA and the UK, and issues either a sample set of competence framework materials or your host organisation’s framework, as appropriate. Participants then review the framework provided and identify three key competencies they feel are their priority areas. After that, you lead a review of how people learn from the many and varied experiences presented in the workplace. The participants generate a list based on their own experiences and also review a handout of some ideas identified for you to use. They next work in small syndicate groups where they help each other identify which range of appropriate opportunities they will use to develop each of their top three competency needs. You close the training activity with a plenary review that looks back at the learning covered and forward to what individual participants will do to transfer their action plans to the workplace.
