The range of styles used to help people become more effective at work can be described as forming points along a continuum. At one end of this continuum is managers taking directive approaches and at the other is a very non-directive approach. This training activity introduces the range of approaches available.

This training activity is designed to be used to show managers what’s involved in a variety of activities that help develop individuals at work. The training activity can be used in any programme that aims to develop individuals based on their talents and needs, regardless of age, sex, race, disability or any other reason for which they may potentially be discriminated against. This basis of understanding of each style is developed further in ‘Setting up a coaching discussion’, ‘Conducting a coaching discussion’, ‘Managing feelings and emotions’, ‘Mentoring at work’, ‘On-the-job training’, and ‘ Counselling skills’.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers acting as facilitators, but managers, coaches, colleagues or consultants can readily facilitate this training activity.
