Most organisations assign a role to use according to the nature of the job we hold. We may also ‘play’ other roles, depending on our other interactions within the organisation. In this training activity, participants are assigned roles and asked to carry out a specific task. They analyse their effectiveness while in their assigned role and reflect on the nature of the roles they hold in teams at their workplace.
You explain that the purpose of this training activity is to examine the importance of different roles within a team and how these interact to produce a smoothly functioning team. Participants are assigned different roles in an exercise to build a model space station. You encourage them to explore their experiences, in particular how restricted they felt within their designated role. Working in pairs, participants then look at the roles they play within their organisations and how effective they are in these roles. You end the training activity by asking the participants to consider how they can increase their impact and effectiveness in the roles they play in the workplace.
