At times, all of us are faced with difficult or aggressive behaviour from colleagues or from those senior to us. It can be particularly difficult to deal with because of the power relations in the workplace. This training activity is an opportunity for participants to consider both what they want to achieve and how to achieve it in these particular situations.
This training activity starts with the participants briefly considering what is different in dealing with difficult and aggressive behaviour from colleagues or senior managers than dealing with it from clients or customers. You then move on to an exercise where the participants, in small groups, consider prepared scenarios and identify effective action to take in each case. The training activity closes with an opportunity for the participants, working in pairs, to summarise their learning by looking back over a situation that they have dealt with in the past and reviewing their behaviour, in order to learn for the future.

Purpose: This training activity is intended for use by trainers in a programme on dealing with difficult and aggressive behaviour. It can also be used in a programme on Health and Safety, since difficult and aggressive behaviour can be experienced as extremely stressful and is, therefore, a health risk. You could also use the activity on a conflict management, or negotiating skills course. Try and plan to timetable this training activity so that there is a break following it, to allow participants the opportunity of working through any emotions that the exercise raises, either with you or with a colleague.
