Verbal communication is an essential skill for any team. A good deal of communication is by telephone, where people can respond and ask questions, or by e-mail where asking questions is rather more difficult and replies are slower. It is essential, therefore, to be able to pass on information effectively and accurately. This short training activity simulates the difficulties of telephone communication and gives experience and practice in this vital skill.

One participant (speaker) describes a diagram for the others to try to draw as though on the telephone. The participants then discuss the difficulties of trying to understand and reproduce the information accurately. Finally, a broader discussion looks at verbal communication difficulties in a team and how these can be overcome.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers as a verbal communication exercise to simulate the problems involved in giving information or instructions by telephone, where the speaker and listener cannot see each other.
