One of the causes of conflict at work is the simmering resentment people experience when they have not been assertive. Another cause of conflict at work is the hurt experienced when other people are aggressive. The simmering resentment boils over into aggression and can easily lead to conflict. The hurt festers and is expressed in an aggressive outburst. This training activity is an introduction to assertive behaviour and provides an opportunity to practise disagreeing assertively, aiming to prevent or manage conflict.
Following your brief introduction to the purpose of the training activity, the participants work to define assertive, non-assertive and aggressive behaviour. The definitions are confirmed during a feedback session. Next, the participants list people’s rights at work that underpin assertive behaviour. Then, in small groups, they develop assertive, non-assertive and aggressive responses to four scenarios, which they present to the whole group. The responses are ‘critiqued’ to identify appropriate responses. Finally, the participants work individually and then in small groups to identify the links between assertive behaviour and conflict management and prevention.
Who is it for: This training resource, intended for use by trainers, is an introduction to assertiveness techniques and provides a practice opportunity, so that the participants can say clearly and concisely what they mean to enable effective communication reducing the possibility of conflict.
