Disciplinary procedures in different organisations may have any number of stages; all will include some elements of negotiating agreed positions and presenting a case, with a panel negotiating and agreeing positive outcomes based on what is presented. Those involved in any stage of the procedure will need to understand and be able to use appropriate negotiation, presentation and decision-making skills.
After a brief introduction, small groups negotiate a donation to a charity. The full group then consider what has helped and hindered the negotiations. A participant from each negotiating group is appointed to be a member of a decision panel and these participants work together to develop criteria for their decisions, whilst the rest of the groups prepare to present a case for selecting their chosen charity. A ‘goldfish bowl’ exercise is used for the making a case and agreeing a positive outcome exercise and this is followed by a review session. Individuals complete a learning log and this is enhanced through a ‘milling around’ exercise to collect and give feedback among the full group. The training activity ends with a round where each participant identifies some application of their learning back in their workplace.
