This training activity is part of the third stage of the recruitment and selection process – processing the application forms. Both the application form and the sifting process must continue to maintain the objectivity produced by the first two stages. Most application forms contain information which could be used to unlawfully discriminate when application forms are sifted. Just as earlier discrimination law applied to application forms, so does the more recent age discrimination legislation. Organisations that wish to avoid charges of discrimination at the sifting stage should review their application process.

This training activity helps participants to recognise that the sifting of applications can be unlawfully discriminatory if the application forms contain potentially discriminatory information. It also leads them to recognise the implications that legislation has for such forms.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers acting as facilitators, but managers, coaches, colleagues or consultants can readily facilitate this training activity.

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to help participants to recognise that the sifting of applications can be unlawfully discriminatory if application forms contain potentially discriminatory information. It helps them to recognise the implications that legislation has for such forms. It can be linked with ‘Effective recruitment and selection’, which provides the essential criteria that should be checked in any lawful selection interview. It will enable participants to develop a legal application form.
