This is a fun session, which really helps participants to improve their questioning skills as coaches. The activity consists of two exercises: one to emphasise the need for co-operating partners to communicate effectively in order to achieve goals, and to use questions as the basis for communicating: the other enables coaches to improve their questioning skills by focusing on what a performer is most aware of as they carry out a task.
You introduce the training activity with a pairs exercise, which highlights the problems caused by a lack of information and communication. You review the exercise and discuss effective questioning as a solution. The participants then repeat the exercise, having shared their personal goals with their partners, and then review their greatly improved results. In the next pairs exercise, one partner becomes the coach and the other becomes the performer. The performer sets a goal and carries out the task. The coach’s role is to ask effective questions to help the performer become more aware of their activities in order to improve performance. Finally, you review the major points of the training activity.
