Essentially, performance review implies examining past achievements and work behaviour with the objective of agreeing and implementing a plan to be even more effective in the near future. Targets are set, resources agreed and dates nominated by which change will occur. After a set period, progress is reviewed and significant changes are analysed. Depending upon the organisation and the particular system in operation, people’s reward packages may be amended to recognise progress made. If this happens across a sizeable portion of the workforce, the benefits to the organisation and its employees can be considerable. Production, quality, service and personal skills evolve and help produce corporate and individual success. If all this is to occur, the whole performance review system needs good management. Managers have to polish their interpersonal skills, communicate well in a one-to-one mode and strive to recognise the needs of their team members. The workers being appraised have to give commitment to corporate, departmental and team objectives. And, if they are to benefit to the maximum, they must crystallise their own ambitions for work satisfaction and relate these to work objectives.
This training activity opens with a brief introduction to, and presentation of, appraisal elements. Participants work in groups to identify topics of particular interest, or where there might be a training need in the organisation. The feedback session allows the trainer to elaborate on those topics. In a second exercise, and as a consequence of the feedback discussion, the participants refine their priority interests. The training activity closes with the trainer undertaking to consider the implications of the participants’ priority selections.
