Employee harassment takes many forms, occurs for different reasons and can be felt by an individual or a group. The increasingly diverse workforce and changing attitudes to equal opportunities are just two reasons why employee harassment has become a business issue. A cultural work environment where employees feel they can express themselves without felling threatened or victimised is needed in all organisations. Competition between organisations means that those acknowledging this are likely to succeed.

You begin this training activity by considering the nature of and grounds for harassment in the workplace. The participants then examine ways in which harassment may happen and what might be done in certain harassment situations by a colleague and what would be expected of a professional member of staff. They also look at possible action in those situations. The participants go onto look into the personal qualities required to deal with the sensitive issues that harassment may involve. They next analyse a case study situation with the aim of updating organisational policy. Finally, you administer a role-playing exercise designed to explore the handling of an interview between employer/manager and employee regarding a harassment situation, participants take part, either as player or observer.
