This training activity is a mix of group discussion, pair working, and physical trust exercises. Building relationships of trust is a key emotional competency in today’s workplace. Command and control will not work any more. Influencing, without necessarily having authority, has to cross organisational boundaries and functions. People need to build alliances and partnerships, and build and sustain networks of mutual exchange to get the job done. Central to these relationships is trust.
You start the training activity with a physical trust exercise to bring to the surface real feelings and attitudes about building trusting relationships. This is followed by a discussion of the importance of trust in today’s organisation, with the structural changes that have taken place. The participants are then asked to analyse levels of trust in their network of relationships, and to explore the origin of their own attitudes and feelings about trust. This leads to a consideration of the actions they can take to build and strengthen trust with key people in their network. The training activity is rounded off with a second physical trust exercise to demonstrate that trust in the group has increased as a result of personal disclosure and empathic inquiry.
