Successful organisations depend on the contributions of the workforce for competitive advantage, so it is necessary for organisations to supply employees with the means for achieving effective performance. At some time in their working lives many employees need some form of help and guidance (counselling). Employee counselling is good business practice, not ‘soft’ management. Effective counselling can, for example, increase employee confidence and commitment, improve performance and reduce time off. There are many types of situation where listening and guidance by a relevant person will be beneficial not only for the individual but also for the organisation as a whole. This sort of help should normally involve ‘giving advice’. Each situation is unique because each individual is unique.
Many employees at some time need help with their problems, and you begin this training activity by asking the participants to consider the need for and value of counselling in the workplace. You next examine some common situations where counselling may be needed, and how those responsible for employees require training to manage them effectively. The participants than take part in an exercise concerning the effects of a domestic problem on an employee in the workplace and how a manager might handle the situation, through effective skills and positive behaviour. A further exercise looks into a situation in the workplace that is creating interpersonal problems and what steps the participants would take if they were the manage dealing with it. The participants review the key learning points of the activity and you encourage them to apply what they have learned in other work and social situations.
