This training activity will show that with a little knowledge and a bit of planning and sensitivity, employers can accommodate disability, without service level or profit penalties. Existing employees who become impaired can continue with a useful career. New applicants with a disability can bring with them skills, stability and dedication.

You begin this training activity by giving the participants information and some statistics that show the approximate magnitude of the disability issue and the potential personal impact on those present. The participants complete a questionnaire that records their initial views on certain aspects of disability. They go on to consider information about categories of disability, and specifically physical disabilities and medical conditions, in relation to the key issue of fitness for work. Participants next examine a case study involving preparing to interview a disabled person for a job. The participants next consider issues arising from the disability discrimination act 1995 that affect the workplace, and develop outline thoughts on the possibilities for integrating more people with disabilities into an organisation. You conclude the training activity with a return to the questionnaire the participants completed at the beginning. The suggested answers reflect all the subject matter of the activity.
