In October 1991 Opportunity 2000 was the first campaign in the UK aimed at increasing the quality and quantity of women’s employment opportunities. Employers were invited to sign up to the campaign for the competitive and performance advantages it would bring rather than for any social or moral reasons. Since then there has been much change in organisation culture, and over 25 per cent of the work force are employed in organisations that have joined Opportunity 2000. There has been improvement in the number of women in higher-level jobs, but there is still much to be done.
You begin this training activity by introducing the opportunity 2000 campaign and its objective. The participants then study the case of a woman who is seeking advancement, in an exercise relevant to the objective of opportunity 2000. The participants then consider the changes made in organisations that are members of opportunity 2000. They go on to examine a case of promotion jealousy, which leads in to a consideration of the ways to career success that the participants should be pursuing. Finally, you examine why opportunity 2000 was different from other initiatives to improve the gender balance of the workforce.
