People who have achieved excellence entirely through their own efforts have learned how through a process of trial and error. If they had no role model to copy, this process may have taken many years. Modelling enables successful strategies of others to be learned and replicated in a much shorter time and eliminates the trial and error phase. This training activity will start participants thinking about excellence and how others have achieved it. During the modelling process the unconscious mind makes comparisons between the ‘excellence behaviour’ and their own, identifying potential areas for change and improvement.
In the first part of the training activity, participants will identify public figures that, in their perception, are outstanding in their fields. It is highly likely that this selection will include either Richard Branson or Anita Roddick or both. Using props and with the help of a role-playing volunteer, the success strategies of either Branson or Roddick will then be elicited through questioning by the whole group. In the second part of the training activity, participants will pair up with someone who has a skill they would like to model. Through questioning, they will elicit the other person’s strategy for this particular skill and then they, in turn, will share a skill strategy of their own with someone who wishes to model it.
Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to get participants thinking about excellence and how others have achieved it. The study and elicitation of successful strategies from real life examples both within the organisation and from the outside world.

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers with participants at all levels, especially those keen to improve their skills and abilities. The modelling technique encourages proactivity in personal development by offering a short cut to achieving results. This is also very motivational for those who are not natural ‘self-starters’.
