The role of the leader is vital to any team’s performance. In this training activity, a member of the group has the opportunity to lead the team in a problem-solving exercise based on a fantasy scenario.
You start by explaining that the purpose of this training activity is to explore the issue of leadership. The group chooses the person they want to act as leader for the exercise. You then give this leader their brief and they, in turn, brief the team, who will together try to discover ‘whodunnit?’ The team’s task is to solve a crime, given a number of clues; it is the leader’s job to ensure that a solution is found. When the exercise is finished, the group analyses its experience of leading and being lead during the exercise, both in a large group and in smaller groups. Participants then consider how closely this exercise resembles their experiences in the workplace. They consider their own leadership qualities and how they can improve their leadership role.
