Start this training activity by asking participants how creative they feel. This May surprise them, because they are likely to believe that managing discipline is a matter of collecting facts, not of using the imagination. Go on to explain that in this training activity they will be working as training managers, to help design a course on managing discipline, and they will need to be creative in their approach.

This training activity is particularly suitable for participants who are new to managing discipline. It emphasises the importance of using the disciplinary procedure in a positive way to change behaviour, not to punish an individual. Participants are asked to imagine that they are a training manager, thinking about a theme for a disciplinary course to provide an overview of the purpose of discipline. The role of the trainer is to encourage their creativity and ensure that participants understand why discipline should be used in a positive manner. This is a very simple training activity, which can be used as an introductory activity or as an energiser. Since participants work in pairs, the training activity provides an opportunity for people on the course to meet each other. An alternative method of collecting the feedback is suggested in the ‘Variation’ section.
