Constructive criticism, based on someone’s accurate observations of what we have done or said and offered in the spirit of learning and development, can be really enlightening and helps us make positive changes. Negative criticism, based on assumptions, or offered in a spirit of blame or punishment, is likely to arouse feelings of defensiveness and anger and to provoke conflict. This training activity is an opportunity to identify and practise the key skills for constructive criticism.

Following your introduction to the purpose of the training activity, the participants work in small groups to identify the dos and don’ts of giving feedback and constructive criticism. They display their work and view each other’s work; your input on giving feedback and constructive criticism summarises the learning so far. You then establish a three-round skills practice exercise, where the participants work in threes to practise giving and receiving feedback and constructive criticism. The training activity concludes with a brief review of the extent to which, and how, effective feedback and constructive criticism help to manage conflict.
