Everyone is unique because we each have our own personal set of ‘filters’ which helps us to make sense of the world going on around us. Filters are formed from experiences, attitudes, beliefs, language and a host our other elements and, because of their very personal nature, everyone’s filters are different. This means that we all think and behave differently, hence our uniqueness. If we are able to gain an insight into the filters of others, then we will have a much greater understanding and tolerance of others’ behaviour. In any organisation where people are working together to achieve goals, such insight is both essential and beneficial.
You explain the NLP model of communication and behaviour to the participants to give them an understanding of how we all create our own personal ‘model of the world’. Then four of the filters are explored in more depth. These are: 1 towards/away from; 2 proactive/reflective; 3 internal/external frame of reference; and 4 big chunk/little chunk. In groups of four or five, participants have a discussion about general work issues, during which they will all be guessing each other’s filters based on the language being used. At the end of the exercise, you check each group for its consensus opinions of each individual’s filters and log them on a flipchart. The participants then give feedback, individually, as to whether they agree with their group’s findings or not. Any disagreements are explored to discover why their group came to that particular conclusion.
