Team members need to have an understanding of what makes a good team leader so they know what to expect from a leader during exercises and in the real world of work. This helps teams, team leaders and team members to recognise: the functions of a team leader; how effectively the leader carries these out; and the roles in the team. This case study, with its accompanying notes, gives a structured way of doing this by focusing on fictitious characters in an office environment.

The participants review previous work on team roles and the functions of a team leader. They complete a case-study exercise and present their ideas for discussion. In a final discussion, the participants offer constructive feedback on team leadership in their own workplace.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to give participants a clear understanding of what makes a good team leader and to help them to recognise the functions of a leader, and how effectively these are carried out.

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers, part way through a training programme when the participants already have some experience of giving feedback about the whole team but now may need a structure for giving more specific feedback to the leader or person taking the leader role. The case study shows how the functions of the team leader and team roles link together.
