This is an opportunity for ‘new’ coaches to observe other participants coach, and to be observed themselves, in order to improve their skills. Those who have been coaching for a short while often find it is very valuable to see others perform as coaches, and to observe the response and reaction of the performer who is being coached. The training activity leads itself to open and free-flowing discussion as a method of improving coaching performance. It works very well in an informal atmosphere.
You introduce the training activity by defining the term clinic session, and explain that each participant will have the opportunity to take the role of coach, performer or observer. The participants then work in groups of three to coach each other on topics of interest to each ‘performer’. After each coaching session an ‘observer’ leads a review of the session between the ‘coach’ and the ‘performer’. The training activity ends with a general discussion on what has been learned and where improvements have been made.
