Feedback is an essential leadership tool, allowing leaders to clarify standards and objectives and give motivation and encouragement. This core skill enables leaders to build the competence and effectiveness of their team by noticing and commending what is good and helping them eradicate what is unhelpful.
You start the activity by asking the participants to demonstrate from their own experience how important feedback is. Then you ask them to work in small groups and reflect on their own experiences of feedback and identify what does and doesn’t work for them. Next, you describe the basic principles of feedback and go through a set of eight guidelines. Finally, you introduce participants to the golden rule of feedback.
Who is it for: This training activity is intended for use by trainers to give participants a clear introduction to the process of giving feedback, which is one of the most useful leadership skills.

Purpose: This training activity is intended for use by trainers to give participants an introduction to giving feedback. Because giving feedback is such a core skill, this activity is deliberately short so that it can be integrated with almost any of the other activities in this pack. It includes very little skills development because there are many opportunities to use and develop these skills in many other activities. This activity can be used in full the first time feedback is going to be an element of a session – on later occasions it is useful to remind participants of the central principle, the golden rule of giving feedback, shown in OHT 12.2. In particular, this is a crucial addition to ‘Communicating the essentials’, and an essential precursor to ‘Coaching for growth’.
