The successful introduction of any new management tool requires the support of, and commitment from, all those who will use this tool to manage others or be managed using it. This activity is designed to help managers considering introducing a competency-based approach to influence other managers and staff in a positive way by exploring the reasons for introducing competencies and identifying actions to take.

To open the activity you give an overview of the historical background to competencies and encourage the participants to share their experiences of competencies. The participants then carry out a series of exercises which include identifying 'more helpful' and 'less helpful' descriptions of performance management; using the onion model as a means of representing ourselves as being made up of personality, attitudes, beliefs and behaviours; and recognising that the 'more helpful' descriptions are behaviourally based. The participants then have an opportunity to consider the description of an individual and rate them against the levels within the generic competency framework supplied with this activity and write behaviourally based descriptions. In the final exercises the participants look at the pros and cons of competencies from the business angle and identify potential causes of action, starting with 'we could' and refining these into 'we should' and 'we must'. This provides them with an action plan to which they have all contributed. You end the activity with a review of the key learning points and a request for volunteers to circulate the action plan and to find out if there are others whose support they could enlist and who should be informed.
