Criticism given in the wrong way is almost certainly going to make the situation worse. Unlike the planned approach of appraisal, criticism is generally ‘on the spot’, and specific to one particular situation or type of behaviour. There are various factors which might lead a person to criticise aggressively, non-assertively or in other ways which will not produce the desired outcome. The rights and responsibilities of all parties involved in criticism must be considered and understood, and there are ‘rules’ which increase the likelihood of assertive, hence effective, criticism.
Participants consider and practise the skills of giving criticism.
