It’s so frustrating when you find you have spent more time helping somebody to do a task than it would have taken to do it yourself – so why delegate in the first place? Refining the process takes dedication and practice, which means that delegation often tends to be a very much under-used skill. This training activity helps participants identify their own personal barriers to effective delegation and gives them an opportunity to practise delegation skills in a low-risk environment.

You ask participants to complete a questionnaire which evaluates how well they currently delegate in their work environment. You then ask them to look at tasks they are currently involved in and examine why they do the task and whether someone else could do it. You then invite each participant to choose one task from their task list and, in a role-play situation, follow the five-step approach to delegating that task. Finally you ask them to assess the implications of what happens when delegation goes wrong.

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers with participants who have an understanding of the key steps required for effective delegation, as covered in ‘The general principles of delegation’. You also have the option of linking it with ‘Where does your time go?’, and ‘Analysis of the timelog’, as the information from the timelog can be used to help participants analyse tasks which could be delegated. The training activity is particularly beneficial for those who have a reasonable knowledge of delegation but find it difficult to apply it in practice.
