In a world of rapid global change, we must draw on diverse sources of ideas and knowledge to find new solutions and ways forward. In particular, we need to draw out people’s tacit knowledge – the knowledge people carry in their heads that they have gained through experience and informal learning, the knowledge that isn’t stored in formal information systems. This training activity is an adaptation of the technique called ‘future search conference’ for involving a wide range of stakeholders in an organisation, in building a picture of the future they want. The purpose is to enable the stakeholders to take responsibility for co-creating their desired future, and action planning to bring it about.
You begin this training activity by asking the participants how they can capitalise on the diverse potential in a team or group. You go on to introduce the five principles for capitalising on diverse potential. Participants are then asked to give ideas on the communication principles for running a session with a large cross-section of the organisation to decide the future of the organisation. The main part of the training activity is a whole-group knowledge sharing and knowledge creation exercise. In a final discussion, you ask the participants to explore how the technique can be used in the organisations to achieve wider participation in the development of the company.
Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to introduce participants to a technique called ‘future search conference’, to include everyone in the enterprise of defining the culture that will sustain organisational growth.
