Managers are often faced with aggrieved staff. In some cases the grievances will fall outside the formal grievance procedure. Whether the grievances fall within or outside the procedure, managers will need to ensure that they have friends in high places. This training activity enables managers to identify legitimate grievances and develop skills to handle them. This training activity also offers an opportunity to use processes and to practise skills to respond to grievances from staff.
Following a short introduction to the purpose of the training activity, participants complete a quick quiz to identify which grievances fall within the formal procedure. Then you make a short presentation on the principles and procedure for grievances. Next, participants work in small groups on a two-stage case study, which includes a practice grievance meeting. This practice opportunity concludes with a small-group review and the individual completion of a learning log. In the whole group, participants share key learning points about managing grievances and building support. The training activity concludes with participants listing the emotions managers may experience when faced with staff grievances and a reminder of the importance of using their support networks.
