Disciplinary matters are a normal part of organisational life. This activity starts by asking 'What is a disciplinary issue?' When the issues concern poor performance or unacceptable behaviour, then competencies can help. This activity looks at a code of practice and the disciplinary circumstances in which competencies can be used.

The activity opens with a group discussion and examination of disciplinary issues, what codes of practice are, why we have them, and how to use them. In a case-study exercise, the participants prepare for a disciplinary interview using competencies. The aim of the interview is to improve performance by being positive about the outcome and clear about the level of performance to be achieved. The groups record their findings on individual handouts and the main points on a group flipchart sheet, which is presented and then used in a plenary feedback session. The activity closes with a review and discussion of the key points of the activity: what competencies can do to support the effective handling of the disciplinary processes.
