Fact: all learning and development must be matched to an organisation’s business objectives. Fact: all people have knowledge, skills and experience to contribute to achieving these objectives; all of these people need to be engaged and nurtured. Fact: people with high-talent potential, combined with ‘that certain extra something’, need to be given opportunities for self-development – opportunities that will ultimately benefit the organisation. Fact: the manager has a crucial contribution in managing talent. Fact: however creative, supportive and influential a manager is, the manager cannot work alone. Fact: managers need to influence an organisation’s decision-makers, bringing them ‘onside’; these influencers can help to promote and embed talent development across an organisation. And who influences the influencers? The manager!

The training activity opens with the participants and the trainers collaboratively defining the word ‘talent’. This is followed by a quick brainstorming session of what a manager needs to be doing in ‘the war for talent’. This sets the scene for the main part of the training activity where participants meet Talentosaurus Rex and enter a world where dinosaurs face the same talent management challenges; that is, getting the decision-makers ‘on board’ in order to make things happen.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to allow participants to analyse the processes required to get the decision-makers to agree to implement their talent potential ideas.
