It is all too easy to think that sending a staff member on a training course will solve performance problems; further, if the training course does not ‘solve’ the problem, you can blame the provider! It may be the case, however, that there is no learning need and that the ‘problem’ lies elsewhere. Alternatively, there may be a learning need, but a training course may not be the most appropriate way of meeting that need. This training activity offers practical ways of identifying and meeting learning needs.
Start off with a brief introduction to the training activity. Together with participants, you then develop a group list of possible methods for meeting work-based learning needs. The training activity continues with an exercise in small groups, where participants consider how to identify learning needs in given situations and note their findings on group flipchart sheets. Participants then work in pairs to review a past experience of identifying learning needs and assess the extent to which this was effective. You close the training activity with a brief summary of the key learning points.
