In the same way that listening is a vital skill for a team, so is questioning in order to communicate effectively in meetings, discussions, and so on. This activity focuses on the kinds of questions typically used in teams and an exercise to develop and practise questioning skills. It does not attempt to cover every type of question, but focuses on those that are most common in teams.
The participants are introduced to the different types of questions through a discussion and short exercise. This is followed by a short consolidation exercise on the recognition and use of different kinds of questions. The main exercise requires the participants to apply their knowledge of the different types of question and their listening, summarising and note-taking skills. There is a final discussion of how these skills can be applied in teamwork.
Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to involve participants in a short discussion on the different types of questions typically used in teams, and an exercise to develop and practise the participants’ questioning skills.

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers at an early stage in a training programme, such as shortly after ‘The post office robbery’. This is a good exercise to use before ‘The meeting’. However, it could be used after ‘The meeting’ if it is identified in the debrief sheets for that exercise that this skill needs improving. The training activity can be used alone where the participants need help or practice in asking effective questions to improve their involvement in discussions and meetings.
