Beliefs are a powerful driver of behaviour. Whatever you believe you can, or cannot, do – that will be true for you. Negative beliefs suppress capabilities and are often not based on any kind of reality or past experience, just self-doubt. By identifying, exploring and changing negative beliefs, self-doubt is replaced by self-belief. This in turn has a positive effect on behaviour, facilitating improvements in personal performance.
Participants work in pairs and use a set of ‘loosening-up’ questions as a guide. They explore with each other why it is that they are not making satisfactory progress towards achieving a particular goal. The reasons, or, ‘yes, but…’ statements that are offered then have their validity challenged, with the objective of replacing them with new, empowering alternatives. These are then formulated into positive affirmation statements. Finally, participants imagine a time in the future when they have achieved their goal. They check to see if there were any other empowering beliefs that helped them en route to success and these are added to the affirmations.
Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to show participants how to identify, explore and change negative beliefs. As a result, beneficial changes to behaviour occur, facilitating improvements in personal performance. This is further boosted by the reinforcement of positive beliefs.
