It is often the case, particularly at the management level within larger organisations, that special focus is placed on immediate issues rather than on the longer-term view. We could argue that if the immediate issues are not dealt with they will develop into problems further down the line, which is probably very true. So where should our focus be? One particular issue in some organisations is that objectives are communicated without considering the knowledge or current state of mind of the individuals to whom the communication is directed, or the potential consequences of the action. This means that managers in particular are often given very little freedom actually to do what they are paid to do: manage. However, managers still have to do the best they can, and cope with an ever-expanding ‘to do’ list. The issues associated with not making the right choices, or not giving staff feedback, often result in a lack of motivation not only for the manager but also for the team. This training activity addresses the issue by showing that if managers make time to take an overview of the business, and look at it as if from the outside, such issues, and relatively simple solutions, can be identified very quickly.

Participants work as a team on a case study and present their solutions to improve the performance of the imaginary organisation described in the text.
