Trying to understand and identify what constitutes success within an organisation is often not easy or apparent – it is often a result of informal relationships and processes only loosely tied to the formal grading, promotion and appraisal procedures. This training activity allows participants to examine what constitutes success within their organisation and how to use mentoring for personal support.
You open the training activity by asking participants to think about the reality of organisational life and then to air their views on careers within their own organisation. Specific behaviours that are reinforced within the organisation are identified and examples of successful people within an organisation are used to explore these behaviours further. Two guest speakers explain how they have been successful and answer participants’ questions. Informal processes that could support participants are examined in a final series of exercises, including mentoring and approaching others to find out information about a prospective job. The training activity closes with a review of the aspects of informal career procedures the participants have considered.
Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to encourage participants to re-evaluate how the organisation works, and how it can work to their advantage with respect to their careers within it, including ways of using mentoring to support their development.
