The future direction taken as a result of current career decisions is strongly influenced by personal values, attitudes and motivators. In this training activity the participants explore and clarify these areas through a number of instruments and exercises. They use each other and personal exploration, as well as your help to discover or clarify personal values, attitudes and motivation. This training activity gives participants the opportunity to examine their personal drivers, needs and wants. Having clarified this (and also their personal skill set and know-how covered in other training activities), defining the next career step becomes not only an easier decision, but also a better informed one that is more likely to succeed.
The introduction to the activity makes clear to participants that we have to understand ourselves, what satisfies us and what doesn’t, before we can plan a career. They begin by examining personal values – what they are and how in touch participants themselves are with these values in daily living. Participants then consider their own motivation by looking at motivational theories and applying these to personal experience. They explore issues relating to changing motivators over time and their current motivators. A shield is used at various points throughout the training activity to summarise personal values and motivators important to participants. It is used again in the final exercise to summarise what actions should be taken next by participants.
