In any situation, there is a range of styles we can use when we intervene. Judging the most helpful style to use is not always easy. Using the most appropriate style, in any given situation, however, can make a significant difference to the outcomes. This training activity offers participants the opportunity to examine and practise different styles of intervention.

The training activity starts with a brief introduction to the purpose and continues with participants identifying possible styles of intervention. The training activity continues with an exercise to identify the criteria that will be used in deciding which style of intervention is optimum. Next, participants work in small groups to compose and ‘act’ mini scenarios for their chosen intervention styles, guessing the styles that other groups act. The training activity closes with participants’ reviews of the styles of intervention they have used previously and any changes they may want to make for the future.
